A go-to restaurant in East Grand Rapids for our friend group has always been Donkey Taqueria! This restaurant has a concept of Mexican street food, with the cutest cocktails! Our favorite flavored margarita is the prickly pear – that can come in a glass or pitcher! They also have the best spicy margaritas. I love the vibe outside with pretty lights, picnic tables, and good music. We brought Calihan and he just danced to the music and there is a fence that kept him in near us so he could enjoy the outdoors and not get as bored.
The menu is also not incredibly large, but the food is amazing.
Appetizers include: house pickled vegetables, queso, guacamole (personal favorite), black bean skillet, and more.
Tacos range from $3-$6 and what I love is that you can mix and match! My personal favorite is Taco de Pescado and Taco de Borrego. Taco de Pescado is beer battered fried cod, cabbage, lime, cilantro, red onion, and chipotle-caper mayo. Taco de Borrego is lamb, queso cotija, salsa arbol, radish, cucumber, and cilantro.
For my vegetarians – there is also Taco de Papas Verde which is: idaho potatoes, sweet potatoes, queso cotija, onion, salsa verde, poblano rajas, crema, and cilantro. Another option would be Taco de Bruselas : fried brussel sprouts, jalapeno mayo, salsa verde, macha corn, queso cotija.
There are ten different options as of now for Tacos and they are served on big platters for groups so you can all order a mixture and share or order your own and divide them with your side plate.
They also have Tortas and Burritos that can be wrapped in a flour tortilla or you can make it a bowl with rice! They have one tostada option as well, the Tostada del Bosque – house tostada, refried black beans, macha wild mushrooms, spring vegetable salad, salsa asu, pepitas, queso cotija.
Another reason why I love Donkey is that they have menu items for meat lovers, but also items for my vegetarian and vegan friends! Grand Rapids is amazing at having options for those that are vegetarian or vegan – so always ask if you do not see an option somewhere!
There is also an inside seating area for those colder months or rainy days. The parking is a little rough with no designated parking, but there’s normally plenty of room on the street or parking areas behind other bars and shops across the street.
Be sure to add this to your list next time you go to Grand Rapids or if you’re local!
